![]() Thus, you need a bigger safe boat and it hurts you in the draft department. Smaller boats can run in shallower water of course BUT the flats are part of the Merrimack and can get really rough fast( again like Great Bay ). There really is not enough water there to effectively use a boat safe for the Merrimack unless you are around half tide or more, give or take a half hour or so. #3 - half tide to half tide(+/-) use only. Pretty much a lot like Great Bay in that regards. You really have to know what you are doing to get in there barring entering at the height of the tide. The entire area is ringed by danger to your lower unit = mud flats, mussel beds, and an old sunken stone wall on the Eastern end. However getting into the flats is quite a chore especially if you are going in to it blind as you would be. You need a boat with a blind to effectively hunt the flats. Between private land owners and the new Audubon(sp) bird watching center/sanctuary there is no longer really any legal area to walk in. A couple notes for you concerning hunting Joppa.
